Ettore Arco Isidoro Bugatti was born on September 15, 1881, in Milan, Italy. His father (Carlo Bugatti) was an artist as well as a carpenter and was known all over due to his exquisite furniture that was popular even past the Italian boarders. Ettore went through finishing school and then moved up to Milan’s Academy of Art. At 17 years of age, he joined the bicycle and tricycle firm of Prinetti & Stucci as an apprentice.
This was the period by which the automobile had been created. Young Mr Ettore found the technology and mechanics behind the automobile quite fascinating. At this firm, he created his very first motorized tricycle that was powered by two engines manufactured by De Dion and raced it in 1897.
In 1901, Bugatti created his very first car with the assistance of the Gulinelli brothers. A car which he later showcased at the International Exhibition in Milan and won the T2 prize due to the innovation. Later, he approached the de Dietrich Company and asked them to produce his vehicle. However due to the fact that he was under 21 years at the time, his father signed the contract with the company on his behalf and went on to produce five more cars.
Since Ettore Bugatti was as headstrong as they came, the signed contracts with de Dietrich Company and Emil Mathias were soon terminated as the companies wanted a production line of cars whereas Bugatti wanted to develop race cars. Ettore Bugatti despite these setbacks, did not give up in his quest. In 1906 he designed a 50hp engine automobile and offered it to Deutz where they obtained a licence and he was chosen to head the production department.
When his third child was born, Ettore Bugatti opened his own plant. He received financial aid from banker de Vizcaya and Darmstaedter Bank where he aimed at building ten automobiles and five aircrafts. After the funding came through in 1910, his plant built five cars which were all sold. Apart from the car making, his assistant Ernest Fredrich began driving Bugatti automobiles in the racing circuit which turned out to be a huge success.
Later on, between 1914 and 1918 during WWI, both French and American governments tendered Bugatti for aircraft engines. These licence fees gave him the funds he needed to start his activities at the Molsheim plant. As part of his dream, Ettore Bugatti wanted to build the most luxurious car. He realised this dream in 1926 when he debuted the Royale that boasted of 12.7-liter engine with 300 hp.
Ettore Bugatti got a lung infection and passed on in a military hospital in Paris on August 21, 1947. During his time, around 7,900 automobiles were made many of which are still around to date.
